A Game of Thrones/A Clash of Kings A Song of Ice and Fire Book 1 eBook George RR Martin
The Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin is one of my very favorite fantasy series! I have read the series (published to date... there is more coming) 2 times, and this second time I downloaded it to my Kindle (a fantastic device... also highly recommended!!!). The series is set in a medieval type world, with elements of magic (dragons and what appear to be evil wraith-like creatures of the far north). The story revolves around several factions that are vying for control of a kingdom composed of a collection of very strong noble houses. To date, there are hints of a greater threat from outside the fractious nobility of the kingdom, but the details of that threat will have to wait for future installments in the series. There are lots of characters, and the author changes the viewpoint from one to the next as the series unfolds. It starts as a tale of good vs evil, but as the perspective changes from one character to another, the shades of gray multiply! The character development is very good, and while I look forward to updates on other characters and the books unfold, I am captivated that the story of the character that is unfolding as I read. This is a great book, and the start of a great series. It is fantasy, but targeted at adults to a greater degree than a lot of this genre. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If I were to compare it to other series, I would most closely compare it to Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. And the Wheel of Time pales in comparison. Martin's writing is more concise, with none of the redundancies of Jordan. Story lines and plot lines, character development, as well as thematic elements are much more "grown up" than with Jordan. Martin's world building is superb, and with each character you feel yourself "becoming" that character. The only drawback to this series is the length of time between new installments. It has been a looooonnnnnggggg time since the last published book (A Feast for Crows), and although the next installment (A Dance with Dragons) is due this fall... it has been promised in the fall for the past 2 years!

A Game of Thrones/A Clash of Kings A Song of Ice and Fire Book 1 eBook George RR Martin Reviews
Well, first I am pleased by the fact you get two books for the price of one - ya just can't beat that. I'm even more pleased by the content!
I'm a new fantasy reader. This is my third review and in the other two reviews, I did have to point out my disclaimer that I read for "fun" and not from any educated standpoint. I'm not here to educate you or enlighten you with fanciful words, I'm just trying to put a value on the entertainment received from reading the material and let me say, the stars that were given do not lie - these are great books.
I actually found these books from reading the reviews of "The Name of the Wind" (which was awesome) oddly enough - I saw in there, "...I haven't seen an author like this in a long time whose work compares with George R.R. Martin and so and so!" I thought, "Who's George R.R. Martin?" and then found these books, saw the gazillion reviews vs. the number of stars and decided to go for it.
The best way to describe this book is just to say early on in the book, George R.R. Martin pissed me off... He just started killing folks you thought were the stars of the book! What's up with that George?! Fortunately, he gives you new stars to root for...wait a minute George...WTH?!! You can't do that to my new star!!!!! Oh good, the star is saved...what the?!! GEORGE!!!!!!!!!!! Needless to say, the whole book had me twisting and turning every direction. I started sucking my thumb in nervous habit as a result.
What is different about this book than others I have read is George doesn't seem to take sides. The good guys (if you could call them that) win some, and the bad guys win some too and both sides are dang clever, along with George R.R. Martin even though he is constantly pissing me off. Heck, I'm done with these two books and on the third right now and still clueless of whose winning. That is if there IS a winner... or a hero ...or a villain...you think there might be but nooooooo George has tricks up his sleeve. He's shifty, that George.
The first book leaves ya with little closure almost like a movie that should it be a box office hit could introduce a sequel. The next just leaves you hanging...GEORGE!!!!! You piss me off! Ultimately, plan on buying more books.
I now have this love/hate relationship going with George R.R. Martin. He better give me some mental closure on some things with this third book I'm reading...then again, he better not! GEORGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
