The unforgettable, deeply moving story of a woman splintered by war and cultural mores, desperately struggling to hold her family together, THE FIG ORCHARD is a rich, compelling epic of love, heroism, family and empowerment.

In an isolated, tradition-bound village high above the Jordan River, balancing delicately amidst age-old superstitions and religious orthodoxy, Nisrina Huniah, a fifteen-year-old girl, is torn between innocent imaginings and looming apprehensions as she marries a man she has never met – only to fall in love on the night they are wed.

Her joy, short-lived, takes a heart-wrenching turn when the encroaching World War fiercely shatters her reality, propelling her on an unexpected journey where she develops unlikely friendships that ultimately alter her perception of herself and the world around her.

Beautifully written in rich, elegant prose, this sweeping epic of love and friendship, longing, and the hope of redemption is woven into a colorful tapestry that comes alive against the vibrant backdrop of life in early twentieth-century Middle East. With its haunting and deeply affecting ending, THE FIG ORCHARD will remain in the hearts and minds of its readers long after the last page is turned.

I was hooked at the first sentence, and was drawn into s story I would not otherwise have picked up. I found I was identifying with Nisrina from that first moment and stayed up past bedtime for several nights until we reached the end of our journey and I enjoyed every step of our journey. The Fig Orchard is an illuminating look into the life of an intelligent, resourceful Christian Palestinian woman early in the 20th century as she faces trials of life, love, and survival. I recommend the book both for fun and for the broadening of your outlook on life that happens after you read it.

The Fig Orchard edition by Layla Fiske Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

While enjoying the author's rich descriptions of time, place and characters, I learned so much about the culture of Arabian life in small communities. The plot and subplots were artfully interwoven to engage the reader to the conclusion.
This wonderful read takes you out of your own and puts you into a rich cultural background in the Middle East. So much is revealed of the family life, the marriage customs and esp. the midwifery which was a noble career. Probably at that time it appeared one of the few careers available to a woman that allowed her more freedom of movement and value outside of the home. She also brings home how precious education is, especially for women. Something we take so casually here in the United States, is not at all available to women in many countries, or maybe only to the wealthy.

Her characters came alive and lived on those pages as I read on through the book following Nisrina's life with all of its trials and tests, successes and disappointments. Her deep love for her husband and children was so real and her passions so intense.

If you enjoy reading and learning about other cultures, you will absolutely drawn in by The Fig Orchard.
This poignant, compelling epic is a unique love story in a time and place not known for romantic tales the Middle East at the turn of the century. Like other great love stories rich in both setting and character development (e.g., The Thorn Birds), this novel would make an outstanding movie.

This book is easy to read but hard to put down, with surprising twists and turns, always progressing at a comfortable pace to keep the reader enthralled from beginning to end. This highly readable novel gives rare insights into the main characters, with such intimate details and vivid descriptions that you feel like you are there.

One tip after you’ve read the entire book, go back and reread the Prologue. You may find new insights there once you know the rest of the story.
Our Book Club read this book & we all liked the book. We were lucky enough to have the author, who is local, come to our meeting. The book is a very interesting story based on her family. It is well written & researched. It is always good to learn about a part of the world that you aren't familiar with.
The effects of this novel stayed with me long after I finished reading it. I savored the lingering satisfaction, trying to define what caused it. The story unfolds in the Ottoman Empire before, during, and after the first World War. It follows the lives of two main characters from a small village in Palestine. Their family history is woven into stories of daily life, illuminating the customs and evolving perspectives of the time. The characters are deeply developed within a beautifully detailed structure. How the two meet and marry, who they are and who they become is a rich tapestry, the warp of which is a deep, sustaining love. Throughout THE FIG ORCHARD, I was touched again and again by this warm, spiritual love. It elevates the experience of the story and lingers long after the final page. This is literature!
Layla Fiske is a very talented writer. This book was an intriguing historical fiction about a segment of the population (Syrian Orthodox Arab community) in Palestine that I knew nothing about. I found Nisrina, the main character, likeable but almost too perfect. When her beloved husband, Jabran, is conscripted by the Turks to fight the British, she spends the rest of her days waiting for his return. The cultural laws of that time and place were interesting and restrictive for women. The author finds a way to have Nasrina grow while still trying to fit into the family in traditional ways. While serving, Jabran (I felt unrealistically) fights the temptation of a beautiful woman then spends his life blaming himself for being tricked into causing destruction and her death. I found the conclusion a little too neat with too many coincidences. That being said, I would highly recommend this book as an enjoyable read and a very good book club choice. I look forward reading Layla Fiske's next book.
Great read for any book club. The book reads fast and the characters are well-developed and I found it believablle. Nisrina, the main character, is the sweetest, most-loyal and loving character. She does not have an easy life, but her hard-working spirit pays off for her. I loved the authors writing style which made the book a page turner. The ending was very good, although I was sad I had finished the book!
