The Beautiful Land Alan Averill 9780425265277 Books

The Beautiful Land is one of the most inventive and well-written sci-fi/horror novels I've read in a while. It's a little genre-bending (If you read sci-fi, think Dan Simmons) in that it's science fiction but with elements of horror. Not a happy-happy read in parts. And the creature.... yikes.

It's the story of two damaged friends who are trying to figure out how they can be together while keeping the world ... and reality itself ... from tearing itself apart. What makes this book work so well is not only the author's imagination and description but the depth of these characters. These aren't your standard sci-fi characters, who are just there to keep the plot moving. These are real people, people that make sense, that you like, that you can sympathize with, that you **want to survive**!

The Beautiful Land Alan Averill 9780425265277 Books Reviews

I purchased this ebook for my kindle because I didn't have anything to read on a 10+ hours flight. I was in a hurry and this sounded remotely inspiring.
My, it was such a nice surprise! I read it all during that trip, I couldn't put it down. The style is flawless and the storyline is brilliant. Characters well developed and with distinct personalities.
As soon as I landed I checked if the author has written anything else, it's that good.
Recommended
I started the excerpt expecting one thing, but was really pleasantly surprised by the end. The strong characters are stand outs and even though they are both deeply depressed and focused on things that could actually turn many people off, I found myself sympathetic towards both of them - rooting for a way for them to get better and find each other soon.
This excerpt is masterfully crafted.

Such an intriguing opening sentence! Beautiful writing. Interesting, complex, believable characters. And plenty for the reader to wonder about.

Frankly, I don't know what this whole book is about. And, truthfully, I am not a fan of science fiction. But, absolutely, I would want to keep reading this book based on this excerpt!
When reading the book, I kept thinking, "This is tailor-made for a savvy director to turn into a great film." Averill's writing is cinematic in sweep and intensity, and once you start the book, it becomes impossible to put down. It transcends genre - there were moments when I was shocked, smiled, grimaced, and laughed out loud - and it springs from sci-fi to horror to adventure... Truly an exceptional book.

This is a fantastic debut novel, and, hopefully, the first of many to come from the inspired mind of Alan Averill.

(And ignore those one star reviews - those are from people wanting to read more than just the excerpt provided through the ABNA Contest... Hopefully they've read the rest by now and can amend their review to match this book's true worth!)
Grabbed this one as I was looking through some of the past CreateSpace contest winners and came away very pleased. The Beautiful Land is a time travel sci fi jaunt at its core, but is so much more. I enjoyed the characters...Tak and Sam were believable, fallible, and real and Yates was the perfect bad guy, always in the background, but not the focal point of the story. A fun read with enough disturbingly real possibilities that it gets you thinking. What if?
Like many others, I read the excerpt from Averill's winning entry to the Breakthrough Novel contest and I was captivated. Leading off with two grim scenes involving two characters well-fleshed out in limited words, I felt suspense over the fates of Tak and Samira...but also waiting for the novel to come out. After purchasing it and reading it almost eight months later, I come away very impressed with Averill's world-building and his ability to create characters worth reading about for 320 pages.

Keeping details to a minimum, the story in The Beautiful Land revolves around a time machine and two figures Tak, a former TV-survivalist explorer who helped develop it, and Samira, the war-scarred friend he left behind. Averill's story is relentless in its suspense and includes horrific imagery as Tak and Samira undertake their journey, but it is at all times a character-centered tale. As other reviewers have commented, Averill blends multiple genres together to positive effect, and, although the story feels far-fetched to me as far as its science-fiction elements, it all fits into the detailed worlds Averill has written, and it certainly does not detract from an otherwise strong read.

This is an excellent debut novel, but also simply an excellent novel, and I look forward to more from Alan Averill in the future.
The basic concept of The Beautiful Land is good, but I feel that it could have been handled better. We are expected to sympathize with the two main characters because of the mental pain both suffer from, but I just couldn't work up any feelings for them. The back stories could have been filled in a little more. For instance, we don't know why Tak was chosen to do the job he was recruited to do. What special qualities did he possess that his phone would ring at just the right moment.
The dialog between the characters does not come across as real people speaking to each other.
One niggling little thing irked me. We are expected to suspend some disbelief, as in most science fiction stories, but on Earth it is physically impossible to syphon gas from an underground tank into a can that is above ground. I don't care what kind of amazing time machines exist or what universes are traversed, this I do not believe. Liquid finds its own level, and when being syphoned, will only flow from the higher level to the lower. It's carelessness with things like that which spoiled the story for me, but as mentioned above, the concept is good if only it could have been handled better.
