Mr. Cutrupi leaves a tantalizing end note to this book to let us know another "Abyss" tale will soon be done. It turns out he is creating a saga that may encompass as many as five books and over the course of those books we will inevitably learn more about the principal characters, Jonathan Brick, who is cut as a Sherlockian journalist, and the red-headed savant, Melody, whose peculiar history and ways enable us to penetrate the mysteries they encounter. We will also be challenged in the books to come to fathom the grand themes about nature - particularly human nature - and good and evil, and fantasy and reality that are integral to The Abyss of Lumberwitch and whose threads, when this first tale has ended, are left untied so they can find their way into the continuing Abyss narrative. It didn't take me long to learn that Mr. Cutrupi has considerable storytelling skills because I was drawn into the world he has created quickly, and I stayed immersed until I closed the book. The writer, whose mother tongue is Italian has written this book in English - a stupendous achievement really - but I am taking points off because there are word and phrase choices that don't work as well as they should - more a problem of editing than writing. Also, I found myself wishing for additional text to help explain some of the character's responses to the people and events they encounter - for astounding things happen but sometimes the characters are not as awe-stricken as they probably should be. I'm giving it 4 stars.

The Abyss of Lumberwitch The Abyss Series Volume 1 Dom Cutrupi 9780995213517 Books Reviews

While not usually my genre, Dom completely captivated me with his first book of the series, the Abyss of Lumberwitch. Rumour has it that a second book, coming out soon, is even better. Can't wait to read it. He is truly a very original writer!
As someone who is very picky with the writing styles in the novels that I read, I was definitely not disappointed with The Abyss of Lumberwitch. I have been especially drawn to fantasy and sci-fi fiction novels for the past year, and I’m so glad my friend recommended this book to me! From the very start, it is obvious that Jonathan is a caring, determined character who demonstrates great compassion when it comes to his adoptive sister Melody. As much as Dom Cutrupi was able to masterfully weave an intricate, well-developed character out of Jonathan, I will have to admit; Melody was definitely the character that intrigued me the most even from the opening of the book “The first time I saw Melody, she had the smile of a child and the eyes of a woman.” There were times when I got a bit confused with the meaning of Melody’s words as a result of her speech disorder, like “I. Play. You.” in her entrance in the first chapter, but I guess what makes this book so enjoyable to read is that it feels real. Although I do not personally know anyone with a speech disorder, I believe that Dom Cutrupi is able to capture such genuineness and uniqueness of a disability and delineate this very thoroughly through his writing.
Writing book reviews is absolutely the hardest thing to do when all I want to do is spoil all the good exhilarating bits, so I’ll keep this review short and sweet and leave you with one last important thought READ IT. YOU WON’T REGRET IT.

I’m not much a reader, usually. It’s been a while since I’ve read a novel in full since high school, but a friend recommended this book to me and I’m glad I read it through. The overall feel that I got from the book prior to reading it, was that it was meant for high school students and other young adults to read. I was thoroughly surprised that it captivated my attention the whole way, and I am a 21-year-old University student! Dom Cutrupi is one heck of a writer. I was also amazed that the genres of the novel was historical fiction mixed with sci-fi…and perhaps a few other things. It’s an interesting mix of genres that I’m not so sure I’ve ever seen before. This makes it even more worth reading... to see how Cutrupi managed to deliver his story in this way.

Onto the characters, which were my favourite part of the story. I find each of Dom’s characters quite captivating, but the mysteriousness of the character Melody is definitely the strength of the novel. Though she has a speech impairment, and is unable to speak like the other characters, she is able to communicate with the people she needs to and it’s interesting to follow these exchanges of dialogues. Melody draws you in with her obviously thoughtful, but quiet mind. She gives off this allure of warmth and poignance, but she is also unknowingly bold (for example, her fashion sense which I love!). Melody is definitely the star of the novel and I loved following her character around. I’m looking forward to what happens next in the series. I’ve been following/stalking Cutrupi on his fan page and it seems he’s getting ready for the release of his next book. Eeeek!
