Evelyn Barrett has a new job, a new baby, and a new life—of sorts. Nearly crushed by the horrific abduction and murder of her daughter (book 1, Unholy Hunger), Evelyn is moving on as best she can.

No longer allowed to practice law, she is recruited by one of the detectives from her daughter’s case to become a police consultant. Her inaugural case becomes a baptism by fire as she joins the hunt for a chillingly methodical and sadistic serial rapist and murderer.

Her revulsion and anger fuels a passion for justice . . . and then it becomes personal. Her friend and law school roommate, Jen, becomes a victim. The rapist has made a catastrophic mistake with Jen he has left her alive and able to talk.

Filled with the chilling tension of Unholy Hunger, Hands of Darkness explores the emotional and spiritual consequences for all involved when justice and compassion collide head-on with the darkest examples of human depravity.

Hands of Darkness A Novel Lure of the Serpent Heather James 9780825442926 Books

Heather James' writing falls into the category of 'can't put down'. Evelyn Barrett is back and living in Sand Diego. Her inner dialog is just as snarky and revealing as it was in James' first book, "Unholy Hunger". The journey from a slight curiosity to full-blown obsession to find the rapist/killer on the loose in San Diego is consistent with what we know of dear Evelyn. The stakes are high, tension in every chapter, and a white-knuckle climax have become James' trademark. If I were a nail-biter, mine would have been chewed to nubs while reading this book.

Hands of Darkness by Heather James was a good book but I had a hard time getting involved in the story. Evelyn Barrett can no longer practice law so she has taken a job as a police consultant and will be working with Detective Thatcher. She worked with him to help solve the kidnapping and murder of her young daughter. At the beginning of the book she is almost at the end of her pregnancy and has the baby before the middle of the story. Working as a police consultant allows her to be at home with her newborn son and to work only hours that are convenient. At least that was the way it was supposed to be. The first case she works on involves a very sadistic serial rapist and murderer who is very methodical in his killings. He leaves absolutely nothing at the scene that would lead to his identity so Thatcher and Evelyn have a very tough job in bringing him to justice. The case becomes very personal for Evelyn when her good friend Jen is raped but somehow manages to survives.

The author did an excellent job in the development of the characters. I had a problem liking the main character for she had so many quirks in her personality that simply rubbed me the wrong way. The description of scenes, especially ones that involved a dead body, were so real that I felt as if I were a witness to what was happening. I love a good police drama, even with murder thrown into the mix, but this story just seemed almost too dark for my taste. The villain was so evil that I cringed every time I read what he was thinking and doing. Evelyn seemed to be a devout Christian but it seemed that a great deal of the time, the devil controlled her tongue. And it bothered me that she would get a bee in her bonnet and strike out alone and not tell Thatcher what she was going to do. That trait finally got her into a lot of trouble and danger. I was a little disappointed with the ending but I guess it was the only way the story could end. In spite of the darkness of the story, there was a time or two that I actually laughed at whatever was happening or being said.

I gave the book a four star rating because I could not honestly say that I loved the book and give it five stars.

I would recommend this book only if you are really into dark murder mysteries with a murderer that seems to have a soul that is pure evil.

Kregel Publications provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
I really enjoyed this suspenseful, amusing book! This book starts soon after the first one ended, with Evelyn Barrett pregnant and now working as a jury consultant. When she's given the chance to work as a police consultant in San Diego with the cop she worked with to find her daughter's killer, her and her husband decide to move there for a fresh start and to get away from the town where so many places remind them of their murdered daughter. The first case she's brought in on is a serial rapist and murderer and her job is to read people and get at the truth. She's a former attorney and also says whatever she's thinking, so she has a way of getting under people's skin. When the case hits too close to home, she ends up in a fight for her very survival!

Evelyn is such a character and probably one of my favorites in all the books I've read. She has a biting wit that never fails to make me laugh and her calm husband is a nice counterpoint to her. I also appreciate the happy marriage that's portrayed, especially after knowing all they've been through. I like seeing her process as she figures out clues and interviews witnesses. I also really like how we see her thoughts on evil and how she views the devil and the destruction he causes. She thinks deeply and looks past the surface to what's underneath. The fact that we get to see inside the killer's mind really gives a chilling and insightful look into the nature of evil. It also adds to the suspense! You could probably read this book without having read the first, but that one gives a lot of insight into Evelyn and makes you really appreciate all she's survived, not to mention being a very unique, emotional, and suspenseful story. I definitely recommend reading that one, too. If you enjoy suspense, you definitely need to check out this series! I know I'm looking forward to the next one!

I received this book free from Kregel Publications in exchange for an honest review.
Heather James has done it again! James introduced us to Evelyn Barrett in her 1st book "Unholy Hunger." As a grieving mother we followed Evelyn as she tried to find her version of justice from the man that took everything so precious away from her. In "Hands of Darkness" Evelyn is back at it working with Law Enforcement using her exceptional people reading skills to help find a serial killer. This book examines the point of view of the killer as well. James is a brilliant author and captures you from the first page. There are so many twists and turns in this book it is definitely worth the read. I cannot wait to read her next book.
Heather James writes another amazing book! Throughout the book I couldn't wait to see what happened next! It was scary, funny, sad, happy, and real all at the same time. The characters are well written and believable. The plot is unpredictable. A great read.

I also like that the book can stand on its own. It is better if you read book 1 first, but there is enough backstory throughout to catch people up without being boring or annoying to those that read book 1.

Can't wait for book 3!
