You can't tell a book by it's cover? How about - You shouldn't tell a book by it's cover but with a cover this spectacular, how could I resist? Let me tell you that I was not disappointed. I fell in love with Tristan, the hero, as soon as he got away from his demented friend. I was a little worried his friend might have his own book but I'm fairly certain that will not be the case. Imogene was a fully developed heroine, totally believable, sympathetic, and STRONG! This is my first book by this author so I may be gushing but it's only because I couldn't put the darn thing down. Michael Hague speaks about tapping into a reader's emotions - this author has manipulated mine splendidly. What an enjoyable escape. Thank you, Ms. Hawkins and please do keep up the good work.

A Duke but No Gentleman A Masters of Seduction Novel Alexandra Hawkins 9781250064721 Books Reviews

This was a good story. A "friendly" wager amongst rakes turns into true love. A fast paced read with no slow moments. You will find it hard to put down, so give yourself lots of available time. You'll need it.
Very well written storyline. Turns and twists Love love turned to hate, friends to enemies. Changing ever to the end. This author has done an excellent job of writing this book from start to finish. A pleasure to read.
First off, I am a woman. My account name is in my husband's name. So just wanted to clear that up.

About the bad reviews for this book Yes, there are two rape scenes in this book. But the Hero of the book is not involved. It is the Villain of the book doing the raping. So I don't really see what all the negative reviewers are upset about. The guy is the villain - he just so happens to be a really bad villain (not like the regular fluffy romance novel villains). Come on, people! It is fiction!

Some other reviews mentioned they thought chunks of this story had been left out somehow. I agree. Maybe the author was told to make the story shorter and she inadvertently cut out stuff she thought wouldn't be missed.

Oh yes, and someone else mentioned about the lack of parental supervision. I wondered about that too. But I see that this book was set in the 1790s (before the usual Regency romance novel period). Maybe the girls had a little more freedom in the 1790s??? I don't know - need to google it. Seems unlikely, but who knows!?!? But again, this is fiction. It is impossible to get everything historically accurate. And let's face it - I don't think we really want everything historically accurate. (Like I'm sure they didn't bathe daily back then, so they probably smelled a little. We certainly don't want to hear that much accuracy!).

This is the first book I have read by this author and I really liked it. I will definitely read her other books that I have missed.

If you are a Julia Quinn fan, then you will probably not like this book/story. It is a little bit darker and more serious than the average "fluff" regency romance. But I liked it. It was a nice change from the fluff.
It can be gruesome to some of the readers, but i love it because it makes the situation so much more believable. It would also makes perfect sense why Blackburn did what he did. For that, I do not mind that he is not a gentleman. Sensual romance between him and Imogen. Even depraved Norgrave lends credibility to our protagonists. Read this if you can handle the sensuality between Tristan and Imogen.
This book is remarkable, I loved it so much it's the beginning of a new series and it is brilliant. Alexandra Hawkins is a soul grabbing writer she tells a story from the depths of love for writing. Every time I get the pleasure of reading one of her books I am moved by her writing and lost in every word . I will always be a fan always. It is a must read I recommend this book highly to all that are looking for that book to get lost in,she's a one of a kind .
This book was romantic, sultry, savage, brutal and raw. Even the "bad" guy is really bad. The descriptive style of writing Alexandra Hawkins is known for, IMO, is outstanding. She TAKES me there. I FEEL what she describes in her characters. SPOILER Yes there is a rape in the book but what amazes me is the brutal honesty of what the h feels is "betrayal". Yes, a woman can be truly raped but her body experience a physical orgasm related to stimulation of the "body" and NOT the mind or heart. I found this book to be an absolute pleasure to read with its twists and turns. There were times I didn't know WHO to route for or who I liked, if anyone. This is NOT a CLEAN read. I applaud Mz. Hawkins on her exploration of a taboo filled subject and the end product that made me glad I bought the book. Kudos! and thanks for a great journey!
The Duke of Blackbern and the Marquess of Norgrave are boyhood friends who compete at anything. Racing, drinking, gambling, even seduction--until Lady Imogen Sunter crosses their path as they make a bet. Achingly beautiful, and innocent, she has no understanding of the jaded gentlemen who are courting her for favors--of how far they are willing to go to get what they want. Fighting for Imogen's affection should have been no more than their usual complicated rivalry. But when Blackbern discovers his feelings for Imogen have deepened, all bets are off. Norgrave, driven by his own demons, won't forsake his pride--and with one shocking act of betrayal that threatens Imogen and Blackbern's newfound desire, Norgrave will set the course for things that should not be done.

I was really happy with the ending, but I will worn you this book does contain rape. It was sad she over comes it.
