Sonchai Jipecheap #4: “The Godfather of Kathmandu” by John Burdett. The murder of a rich American filmmaker appears ritualistic, but a film discovered shows it was a suicide. Still, Sonchai isn’t satisfied, and won’t be until he solves the case. Working with him is Detective Sukum, who doesn’t like Sonchai, but wants a promotion. When the investigation leads to a rich Chinese woman of high education and power in Bangkok, Sukum isn’t too anxious to pursue the case further. In the meantime, a mysterious Tibetan religious man is offering forty million dollars worth of heroin to Vikorn and Zinna, as neither can come up with the case on their own. This means they will have to form a partnership in the transaction. To make matters worse, Vikorn, who is a fan of the American Godfather movies, makes Sonchair a consigliere. The Godfather of Kathmandu Sonchai Jitpleecheep Book 4 John Burdett 9780307263193 Books Reviews
Having recently returned from two weeks in Thailand, my wife and I both read this book and found it great fun. The story is easy to follow and the local references are enjoyable. Even if you have never been to Thailand, you will love this book if you like mysteries.
I have been following the character, Sonchai Jitpleecheep for sometime. His background and his cultural milieu strongly flavours his approach to crime and the people he meets whether they are Thai or not.
After having read a number of mysteries featuring this detective, I know his co-workers and family and how they all interact. If you are new and coming to this series, I do suggest that you read the earlier novels.
Burdett's stories give us a glimpse into a side of life in Bangkok that most of us don't see as everyday tourists. Like all his tales, this is an excellent read. I've visited Thailand several times and am planning a trip to Kathmandu next year so this particular book was timely. I use travel for ideas for my own storytelling. For a glimpse into the dark side of Peru you might enjoy my book, Pisaq Pipeline, PISAQ PIPELINE, A World-Heritage Mystery set in the high Andes and rain forests of Peru.
they're excellent books; yeah yeah; violence all that.. whatever. suspense.
he's also got some sense of humor (all his books or I'd not bother.) well written.
John Burdett can do no wrong with these Thai police detective books. I cannot believe some of the criticisms I've seen from other reviewers, these books are mesmerizing and addictive. Was the first in the series the best (Bangkok 8)? Arguably. But these books are so complex and rich and fun to read, they are total page turners. Can never wait to see what Vikorn or Lek will be up to next, let alone our star Sonchai Jitpleecheep. You know what they say, man going through turnstile at airport going to Bangkok...
I am an avid and discernible mystery reader. This is one of the most interesting series I've read. There is a considerable amount of very subtle humor. The moral values of Thailand (Buddhist) and US (Christianity) are presented with no judgement, Buddhism winning for common sense. Like Martha Grimes, the actual plot is almost secondary.
You should start with the first book, Bangkok 8
I am a big fan of John Burdett's first three novels featuring Royal Thai Police detective Sonchai Jeetpleecheep (Bangkok 8, Bangkok Tattoo and Bangkok Haunts). That said, it took me a second reading to come around to appreciating Sonchi's fourth outing, where (as a devout buddhist) he finds himself in the absurd situation of acting as "consigliere" to his utterly corrupt father figure, Colonel Vikorn, and facilitating the biggest heroin deal in the storied history of Southeast Asian drug smuggling - a mission that not only threatens his karma, but threatens to embroil him in a shooting war between factions of the Thai Army and the police, and puts him under the dangerous sway of a possibly enlightened, definitely empowered Tibetan Lama, who is also a veteran of the CIA-backed resistance to the Chinese occupation of Tibet, and man who never conceded that his personal war was over. While not quite in the league of Sonchai's three previous adventures (having what I still think of as a mildly anti climatic close), "Godfather," remains a fun read, definitely worth ones' time.
